Advanced Speed Skating Requirements
For skaters 9 and over to attend advanced speed skating practice they must be evaluated on the requirements below as a minimum by the head speed skating coach. Skaters unable to accomplish will remain in the junior class (Saturday lessons) until re-evaluated.
Minimum Speed Skating Requirements
Skating forward on one foot – skater can lift either leg and can maintain balance for reasonable time.
Skating backwards – skater can skate backwards while turning (crossovers) in either direction.
Stationary Crossovers on Skates – crossovers in correct speed skating position while maintaining balance with correct arm swing.
Crossover Circles – skater does continuous circles in speed skating position while doing continuous crossovers.
One Foot Circles – skater does single leg outside lateral push while maintaining speed skating position.
Inside/Outside Edge Solemn Course – skater drags one foot behind other foot while maintaining skating position with forward leg bent. Skater goes inside and outside multiple cones at a reasonable speed while maintaining skating position.
Straight Away Scissors – skater does inside /outside crosses with forward foot to propel forward. Alternate legs between cones. Maintain reasonable speed while utilizing heels and full extension.
Skater must also have a basic understanding of speed skating such as; the correct speed skating body position, starting position, how to skate the correct track and location of starting lines and finish line.
Skater should be able to accomplish 100 meters (1 lap) in a reasonable amount of time based on age. Skaters 9 and over should be able to accomplish in 12 seconds or less as a minimum. |
